Home Research CFCCC Space Management and Requests Research Laboratory Space Assignment and Review Process Allocation of research laboratory space is based on both immediate requirements and ongoing assessment of future needs linked to anticipated growth of CFCCC activities. Cancer Center Administration oversees research laboratory space management including the management of policies on assignment and retention, optimizing space usage, maximizing proximities and collaborative opportunities, and enhancing shared capabilities. Expand the topics below to learn more about these areas, or if you are ready to submit your request, click here: Space Request Form How to submit a research laboratory space request Space requests in CFCCC research laboratory areas (Sprague Hall and the second floor of Shanbrom Hall) are submitted to CFCCC Administration using an online form. You will have the option to upload supporting documents (such as NIH Other Support or budget documents) so please have those ready before you complete the form. After CFCCC Admin receives your request, it will be added to an agenda to be reviewed by the CFCCC Laboratory Space Committee with input from institutional partners as applicable. You will be notified by CFCCC Admin by email regarding decisions related to your request. Factors considered during the review of your space request Space allocations are based on the faculty’s impact on the research program through their expertise, collaborations, and publications as well as their research’s alignment with CFCCC’s strategic priorities. Space is assigned to reflect changing needs and can be reassigned at the discretion of the CFCCC Director. The Cancer Center allocates space according to the requesting PI’s total direct costs relative to the average direct costs of PIs in the building. When PIs obtain more funding and need more space, we try to identify benches and rooms adjacent or nearby to the current space. However, this is not always possible. If it is not possible to identify areas nearby or adjacent to the current space, it may be necessary for PIs to move to another location in the building, or to split their lab space. Currently, space is very limited in Sprague Hall but the situation is expected to improve as new buildings are completed. Determining space assignments The committee uses a metric called the Research Space Support Index (RSSI) to evaluate space requests. The RSSI is the “total annual direct cost laboratory support (ADC)” (i.e., total lab funding) divided by “total laboratory space (sq. ft.)”. The metric is calculated each year and reported both as a current yearly (“RSSI-1”) and a three-year (“RSSI-3”) rolling average. Faculty occupying CFCCC laboratory space must maintain a RSSI-3 greater than 80% of the overall RSSI average of all the PIs in the building Faculty whose RSSI-3 is less than 80% of the overall average are at risk of having their laboratory space reduced: Established faculty will be notified by the CFCCC Space Committee to increase their RSSI above the cutoff within two years New CFCCC junior faculty will have three years to bring their current RSSI above the cutoff Faculty whose current RSS-1 exceeds the overall RSSI by 50% and whose space:personnel ratio is <150 are eligible for consideration of increased space assignment, subject to availability Submit a Space Request When are you are ready, click on the “Submit a Space Request” button below to access the request form.
