UC awards $6 million to research aimed at reducing cancer among firefighters
Occupational exposures to carcinogens are a leading cause of cancer in firefighters, and cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters. Yet research targeting firefighter cancers specifically has not placed the occupational experiences of firefighters at the center. The new California Firefighter Cancer Prevention and Research Program funds research co-led by California-based firefighters and UC researchers to address this critical research gap in order to reduce and prevent cancer. RGPO is excited to announce the eight funded awards.

Endometrial cancer surge in young women linked to obesity
Endometrial cancer has risen dramatically in recent years among women under 40, baffling reproductive health experts. UCI Health gynecologists compared two decades of data and now report that the alarming increase among younger women is strongly correlated with soaring obesity rates. They are calling for a concerted campaign to educate women and their doctors about the risk obesity poses for developing endometrial adenocarcinoma.

Community open house celebrates new facilities at UCI Health ― Irvine

UCI Health first in region to use new CT imaging technology
UCI Health has become the first Southern California health system to offer advanced photon-counting computed tomography scanning, which features higher resolution scanning at a fraction of the time necessary for traditional CT imaging. The first patients were scanned on July 16 at the new Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building on the UCI Health ― Irvine medical campus.

UC Irvine’s electronic patient-reported outcome tool reduces cancer care disparities
A University of California, Irvine research team has developed and implemented an intervention to enhance cancer care support services for racial and ethnic minority patients undergoing chemotherapy. The electronic patient-reported outcome tool is a web-based application that allows individuals to enter their health data into a smartphone, tablet or computer.

‘Cutting the cable’ between CD8+ T and T regulatory cells enhances checkpoint immunotherapy
“Our latest research reveals that CD8+ T cells, activated by PD-1 blockade to target melanoma, also interact with T regulatory cells, which subsequently dampen the immune response against the tumor,” said corresponding author Francesco Marangoni, UC Irvine assistant professor of physiology & biophysics.
