1. What are your career/research interests?

Strategies to close achievement gaps for historically marginalized groups, creating anti-racist environments, promoting social justice, and fostering a sense of belonging for underrepresented groups in both educational and organizational settings.

2. How did your early life experiences shape your education and career choices?

My educational pathway and career choices are a direct reflection of those who supported and encouraged me to pursue academic excellence and a life of servant leadership.

3. What brought you to UCI?

Ursula Worsham

I was drawn to UCI because of its outstanding reputation for education, research and commitment to fostering an innovative academic environment through service. UCI’s focus on diversity and community also made it a natural fit for me to thrive.

4. How did you connect with others to build your own sense of community and belonging at work?

Building my sense of community at UCI has been intentional. Since joining UCI in 2016, I have actively engaged in professional development, learner events, conferences, and opportunities to be of service to others. This has enabled me to meet individuals with shared passions and values and allowed me to engage with colleagues from different backgrounds, which has enriched my experience and provided a deeper sense of belonging within the workplace.

5. What motivates you to serve your community and contribute to the CFCCC mission?

I am motivated by the belief that we all have a responsibility to support those around us. Through my work, I hope to make a tangible difference in the lives of others, especially those who may not have access to the resources they need. The CFCCC mission resonates with me because of its focus on reducing health disparities and the burden of cancer.

6. What challenges have you experienced in your professional journey?

As a first-generation college graduate, I have learned hands-on, how to navigate diverse spaces where very few individuals and I had shared identities. On many occasions, my lived experiences did not align with my peers and I had to be intentional about seeking community and support to navigate academia successfully. This journey has reinforced my resiliency and empowers the work I get to do in serving others with similar experiences and backgrounds.

7. What personal or professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of being the first in my family to earn an advanced degree. This accomplishment not only reflects my hard work, but also the sacrifice of resources, time and opportunity, my family, mentors, and community made on my behalf. Education has opened doors for me...that I may open doors for others.

8. What are your interests/hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy reading autobiographies, which allows me to learn about diverse people and their experiences from both past and present. I also love bike riding, travel and spending time with my family (especially my nieces and nephews) and friends.

9. What is a fun or random fact about you?

I love to dance and attend live music events~ I believe music feeds the soul!
